The U.C. Orange County Master Gardeners are presenting free Spring 2012 Garden Workshops at the Great Park and it looks like they’re offering a nice variety of ‘how-to’ days over the next 3 months starting with a ‘Irrigation: Ways to Water Effectively’ workshop on March 17th.  There will be other workshops on warm weather planting, fruit trees, natives, edibles, and the list goes on.  Also, Flowerdale Nursery in Santa Ana will be hosting a few free classes (one in Spanish too) on edibles, herbs, fruits and nuts during the next couple of months on seperate days than the OCMG series. Maybe those people/members interested can meet at SAPG and carpool for one or more of these events? Or, even a bike ride??… did I mention they’re FREE??  Check out the links to get all the juicy details on this series.

MULCH! MULCH! I sing out its melody ~ Mulch ~ The word mulch is a very popular word in gardening. Spending countless hours plucking out the ‘weeds’ and less energy and time on the fun stuff ~ like planting and harvesting, I have realized there’s gotta be a better way to maximize time spent toiling over the avoidable. MULCH! MULCH! MULCH! I love saying MULCH! It’s one of the gardener’s secrets to fruitful results.

Not only is mulch great for amending the soil, blocking stuff you didn’t plant > it saves water! When there isn’t mulch, your plants and the soil around them are exposed to drying out faster.

Two of my favorites items you can use as mulch (because they seem to be readily available) are leaves and grass clippings. Older brown grass clippings work and fresh green grass clippings also add nitrogen to the soil.
